OVERVIEW

About the book

Lionel Verney grows up wild in the hills of Cumberland until a friendship with Adrian, son of the last king of England, changes his life. In the republic of the late twenty-first century they find love, ambition and war. Then news arrives of a plague in the East. At first it seems far away. Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, published this novel in 1826 after the deaths of her husband and several friends. It is one of the first novels about the end of the world and one of the most personal.
