OVERVIEW

About the book

In the Arctic ice, the crew of an expedition ship pulls an exhausted man out of the water. He is Victor Frankenstein, and he tells the captain his story. As a student in Ingolstadt he became obsessed with the secret of life, until one dreary night in November his creature opened its eyes. Frightened by what he has made, Victor runs away. But the creature lives, it learns and it wants to know why its creator abandoned it. Mary Shelley was eighteen when she began Frankenstein, which appeared in 1818. It is often called the first science fiction novel and remains one of the great stories about responsibility.
