OVERVIEW

About the book

“Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents,” grumbles Jo. The four March sisters are spending the winter without their father, who is serving as an army chaplain in the Civil War, and without the money the family once had. Meg longs for pretty things, Jo wants to write and hates being a girl, Beth plays the piano and is afraid of everyone, and Amy dreams of being an artist and a lady. With their mother, Marmee, and the lonely rich boy next door, Laurie, they try to become the little women their father hopes to find when he comes home. Little Women was published in 1868, with a second part following in 1869. Louisa May Alcott drew on her own family, and the book has never been out of print.
