OVERVIEW

About the book

Pip is an orphan, raised “by hand” by his harsh older sister and her gentle husband, Joe Gargery, the village blacksmith, in the marsh country of Kent. One Christmas Eve, in the churchyard where his parents lie, a convict in irons seizes him and demands food and a file. Soon afterwards Pip is sent to play at Satis House, where Miss Havisham still wears the wedding dress in which she was jilted, the clocks all stopped at the same moment, and where he meets the beautiful, cold Estella. Then a lawyer brings news: an unknown benefactor wants to make Pip a gentleman. Great Expectations appeared in weekly instalments in 1860 and 1861. It is one of Charles Dickens’s best-loved novels.
