OVERVIEW

About the book

1801. Mr Lockwood has rented Thrushcross Grange, a house on the Yorkshire moors, and calls on his landlord, Mr Heathcliff, at the farmhouse of Wuthering Heights. He finds a sullen household, savage dogs and a man who wants nothing to do with him. When a snowstorm forces him to spend the night, a hand knocks at the window. The housekeeper, Nelly Dean, tells him what happened there: how old Mr Earnshaw brought home a foundling from Liverpool and how Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw grew up together, bound by a love that neither class nor death could break. Wuthering Heights was published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell. It was Emily Brontë’s only novel.
