OVERVIEW

About the book

“Call me Ishmael.” Whenever he feels a damp, drizzly November in his soul, the narrator goes to sea. This time he travels to New Bedford and Nantucket to sign on to a whaler, and he finds a friend for life in Queequeg, a harpooner from the South Seas. Their ship is the Pequod. Its captain, Ahab, is not seen for days after they sail. When he finally appears on deck, he stands on an ivory leg made from a whale’s jaw and has one purpose: to hunt down Moby Dick, the white whale that took his leg. Herman Melville published the novel in 1851. Little read in his lifetime, it is now seen as one of the greatest American novels.
