OVERVIEW

About the book

Boston, the 1640s. Hester Prynne stands on the scaffold in front of the whole town with a baby in her arms and a scarlet letter A embroidered on her breast. She has had a child while her husband was away, and she will not say who the father is. In the crowd stands a man nobody knows, who has just arrived in the colony. He has every reason to find out the truth, and he has all the patience in the world. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel of 1850 is one of the founding works of American literature, a story about guilt, secrecy and a woman who will not bend.
