OVERVIEW

About the book

The Moonstone is a great yellow diamond, taken from a temple in India during the storming of Seringapatam. Years later it is left to Rachel Verinder as a birthday present and brought to her family’s house in Yorkshire. That same night it vanishes from her room. Three Indian men have been seen near the house, a servant behaves strangely and Rachel refuses to talk. Sergeant Cuff of Scotland Yard is called in. Wilkie Collins wrote the novel in 1868 and told it through the voices of several witnesses. T. S. Eliot called it the first, the longest and the best of modern English detective novels.
