OVERVIEW

About the book

Black Beauty grows up in a green meadow with his mother, who tells him always to be gentle and to do his work well. He is trained, sold and sold again, and every new owner is different. Some of them are kind. Others use the cruel bearing rein, drive him too hard or do not care whether he lives or dies. Through his eyes the reader sees how people treated working horses in Victorian England. Anna Sewell wrote her only book in 1877 to change the way people treated horses. It became one of the best-selling books ever written.
